J E Pike 1877

Don't know where the Jacob Emanuel Pike came from. His father was Emanuel but the most likely first name was James. At brother Lipman Pike's funeral in 1893, Mr and Mrs J E Pike also Mr and Mrs B E Pike and Mr and Mrs I Pike. There was in 1895 Jane widow Emanuel Pike 224 Court, Brooklyn, NY with Israel E Pike. In 1893/4 James Pike living with Israel E Pike. 1900 census Israel E Pike 224 Court b Dec 1853 NY with wife Rebecca and children. J E never appeared in a census with his family, which is strange. Maybe he changed his name and did appear but which brother?

Edward Pinkham 1871

June 2, 1874 Brooklyn Daily Times "Ed Pinkham - It is said that this player a former resident of this city, but more recently of Chicago has turned Granger and wil devote what little energy he has to raising beets" I think he is older than the 1849 birth listed. He was with The Brooklyn Eckfords in 1865, pitched for the Brooklyn Enterprise in 1866, Oriental of Greenpoint, Brooklyn 1867 and 1868, Eckfords 1869. He was living in 1894 and in 1897, according to notes I read in the NY Clipper. And there was an Edward Pinkham in various years in Brooklyn throughout the late 1800s. There was one into the 20th century there.

An interesting coincidence? In 1875 there was a Pinkham pitchig with a Hempstead, Long Island team. A search of the 1890 census for veterans had an Edward Pinkham in Hempstead. But actually living in Hempstead City Directories, the only Pinkham was Joseph, also a veteran. He died in Hempstead in 1910. Too confusing to make any accurate assesment. There was also an Edward Pinkham, age 18, who joined the Army in Brooklyn in 1862. No Edward Pinkhams appeared in Brooklyn CDs until much later in the century.

James Powers 1890

He is listed as James T Powers but I think it is likely not T but no initial or something else. There was a James T Powers living in NYC at the time, but he was an actor who actually did play at the Polo Grounds at 3rd base in games with actors. If he were THE 1890 guy, he would have been a pitcher. Also, in his obit in the NY Times he was many years older than the pitcher was.

According to an article in the Brooklyn Eagle, James Powers was born 1868 in NYC and had pitched for the Staten Island Athletic Club in 1889. NY Sun 2 1 1889 James Powers, who pitched for the Senators of Long Island and Flushing and while pitching for the later club retired the Gorhams on one hit is open for engagement. He would like to twirl for Bergen Point

Jimmy Powers pitched for White Plains earlier in 1889 and in the 8 1 89 Sun he signed with the Staten Island Athletic Club..2 13 91 Sun Powers, late of Brooklyn American Association will play on a strong semi pro club in Harlem. 3 3 91 Sun Powers and Le Strange will be the battery for the Mt Vernon Athletes. 3 27 93 NY Herald Jimmy Powers who pitched the Allertons to the championship of the Semi Professional League is now open for engagement with one of the 4 clubs of the Amateur League. 4 6 92 New Jersey Athletic Club Powers pitcher, cf Powers of Staten Island pitched vs the Giants. 4 1 92 New York played the Jaspers who has Powers pitching for the Staten Isalnd Crickets New York Times 4 7 93 The Oritani Field Club of Hackensack James Powers pitcher, Kinsler catcher. Last I heard of him.
