We have Fred S Wood born 1863 Hamilton, Ont, Canada d Aug 23, 1933 NYC. But a search for a death certificate showed that it was in fact a phantom ballplayer, IE a man who did not appear in the major leagues but claimed to be one. On August 27, 1933 Charles H Wood age 63 died in NYC. He was an editor who was born in NYC and lived there his entire life. In the Sporting News it said Charles H Wood age 64 who pitched for Detroit 1881 1882 1883 1884. No such player. Fred Wood was a catcher for Detroit in 1884 and caught his brother Pete Wood in one game with Buffalo in 1885.
In his fathers obituary in 1902, it said that Peter B Wood was living in Hamilton and Dr Fred Wood was living in London, Ont, Canada. A relative said that his name was Frederick Llewellyn Wood. I have seen him listed as Fred S Wood but it was changed to Fred L Wood

He was listed as Hiram Wright ballplayer for most of the 1890s in DC. In 1897 he was listed as William H Wright when he ran a business in partnership. But that was it in DC. In 1900 census I found Emily C Wright June 1836 NH with Harvey H July 1866 Md. She was a widow with 5 children, all living. So Hiram left DC, who knows where. In the 1910 census was Harvey H Wright 1219 SD St SW 54 Md Vt NH with mother Emily C Wright 80 NJ Eng NH
This player was erroneously listed as J D Young from Mt Carmel,Pa in earlier reference books. In the game story, he was called J B Young.
J B orJoe Young was a Pitcher for the Mt Carmel team from at least 1882, when his name appeared in the N Y Clipper. Over the years he appeared in the Sporting News, Sporting Life and Philadelphia Inquirer as Joe or J B. His team played against Philadelphia area teams at least a few times a year and that was recorded in those publications. In fact he was THE pitcher, and when Mt Carmel played, he pitched.
In the Mt Carmel business directory for 1889/90 and 1891-1893 there was a J B Young National Hotel.
In 1896, Joseph B Young of Mt Carmel was the treasurer of the Mt Carmel team of the Central League. Philadelphia Inquirer April
